DarkForgeGFX News : Feed Spokane Truck is On The Road DarkForgeGFX
DarkForgeGFX

Currently about 14,000 meals a week are being served to people in need at 30 sites in the Spokane area, he said. On Tuesday, Feed Spokane will begin collecting unused prepared food from Northern Quest Casino, a huge addition to the movement to eliminate waste and hunger in the community. Smith estimates unused food from the casino may provide 1,000 meals a month. Adding the casino to the list of about two dozen area restaurants and caterers couldn’t come at a better time, said Smith. He describes the current state of need in Spokane as “a perfect storm,” in which more people are falling into poverty at a time when businesses are able to give less.

Smith said charities and social service organizations have seen a 30 percent decrease in donations this year as the “recession has taken people who were living at the margin and pushed them” into poverty. “Every site I work with says they are seeing more people,” he said. For example, the Truth Ministries homeless shelter has begun serving free meals to as many as a dozen walk-ins in addition to residents of the shelter in recent months, Smith said.

Meanwhile, the Davenport Hotel – Feed Spokane’s largest donor up until now – had to cut its food contributions in half as its convention business declined, he said. Unused food from the Davenport’s banquet kitchen is frozen and delivered to the Women and Children’s Free Restaurant, which feeds about 125 people three times a week. If there is anything left over, it will be sent to other meal sites, such as Hope House or Crosswalk, Smith said. Spokane’s capacity for generosity and volunteerism seems bottomless, Smith said.

“I am amazed at how much gets done in Spokane when it comes to meeting the needs of those in crisis.”

Recently Coeur d’Alene Brewing donated a 20-foot refrigerated truck to Feed Spokane. The charity will put the vehicle into service Tuesday, when it picks up its first donation from Northern Quest.

DarkForgeGFX : Refrigerated Truck Donation Announcement DarkForgeGFX
DarkForgeGFX

THANK YOU SPOKANE!!!

The Leadership team of Feed Spokane is very grateful to the Greater Spokane Dietetic Association, all the participating restaurants, food and beverage venues, the wonderful citizens who dined out in the month of March to support us and last but not least to Ron Wells and Family for all of your contributions to the success of our "Dine Out to Feed Spokane" event celebrated to commemorate National Nutrition Month and raise money to help us get a refrigerated truck.

Through the course of this event the Well's Family has donated a refrigerated truck to Feed Spokane and enough funds have been raised for us to begin the process of getting it into operation.  It has been a huge success and we are all very excited to be able to increase the safety and efficiency of our program to rescue prepared food from various business partners and get it delivered to those charitable organizations that continue to feed our citizens who are in need of a hot and healthy meal.

If we all give a LITTLE, together, we will eliminate A LOT of hunger in our city.  Watch for our truck to be moving food in Spokane in the coming months and when you see it, wave at the driver, honk, smile and know that you were part of doing something very very GOOD!

Thank you

Dine Out to Feed Spokane

As part of celebrating National Nutrition Month® 2009, the Greater Spokane Dietetic Association (GSDA) is sponsoring “Dine Out to Feed Spokane”.  Many of Spokanes' favorite restaurants have participated and

are donating  a percentage of their proceeds from specified days in March to Feed Spokane.

Participating in “Dine Out to Feed Spokane” will help Feed Spokane meet their greatest need, a refrigerated van, to increase efficiency and more importantly to ensure food safety. The cost of a new refrigerated van is approximately $35,000.

Check out the calendar below to find the participating restaurants.
Please thank them for contributing to "Dine Out to Feed Spokane" when you are there!

DarkForgeGFX : Serve Safe Training Coming Soon DarkForgeGFX
DarkForgeGFX

Feed Spokane is working with local industry professionals, 2nd Harvest, Women and Children's Free Restaurant, and other coalition partners to offer Serve Safe Training and Certifications to our Meal Site Supervisors and key staff.  Based on input from the September Coalition meeting we are tentatively going to offer the class in two half day segments in October.  Participants will be asked to contribute $25.00 toward the certification test costs.  This is an excellent opportunity to ensure "Best Practices" are utilized at your meal site, as well as gain up to date information on what the latest food safety procedures are.  For more information please contact Maurice Smith at 509-216-7364

DarkForgeGFX : Thank you to St. Matthews Luthern School! DarkForgeGFX
DarkForgeGFX

A Great Big Thank you goes out the St. Matthews Luthern School for getting involved in the effort to help fight hunger!

To reenforce the lesson of "The Good Samaritan", Mr. Cortwright asked his class of 2nd - 4th graders how they thought they could be good samaritans by getting involved.  Jordan Kennedy raised his hand and said his mom worked with Feed Spokane to help feed hungry people.  Mr. Cortwright contacted me and asked how his class could "Get Involved".  I mentioned that much of our food comes to us in bulk and we must portion it out for different meal sites.  One of the items we use to do this is 1 gallon zip lock bags.  I told him that though it may seem an unusual way to help,  it was a definite need in our efforts to fight hunger.  He sent home a flyer with all of his students just before the big snow fall closed schools for a week.

These wonderful children did not forget the need even with the extended vacation from  school.  Last week I picked up a completely full grocery bag of boxes of 1 gallon zip lock bags!  These  14 young citizens of Spokane took it on themselves to be "Good Samaritans", even with the distraction of a snow storm.  The zip lock bags were delivered to Women and Children's Free Restaurant on Friday morning, just in time for them to be used to divide up food that would get hungry mom's and children through the weekend.  The director Marlene Alford, was very excited to recieve this blessed donation.

Thank you sincerely for being willing to get involved.  Your caring effort helped 112 mothers to get nutritious food to feed their children for the weekend!

DarkForgeGFX : Hands Up Bus Pass Program DarkForgeGFX
DarkForgeGFX
In 2006, Feed Spokane Coalition conducted a survey of 256 meal sites participants. This survey concluded that the primary barrier keeping hungry persons from receiving food was lack of transportation to free meal sites.
In mid-2006 the coalition, named Feed Spokane, in co-operation with SNAP, received a grant from the Spokane Transit Authority to provide 50 free buss passes each month to persons struggling with accessing free meal sites. Each monthly bus pass is valued 33 dollars, that's just over a dollar a day. These free bus passes have had a dramatic and positive impact upon the recipients, giving them mobility and enabling them to access social services, work, health care, and nutritional food. The testimonials are heartwarming individuals receive "freedom", "opportunity", and"hope" as a result of receiving a bus pass.
Not only do they receive a free bus pass, but a relationship is formed between the recipient and an informal case manager. This direct relationship building and case management is a very valuable resource that results in betterment of the life of the recipient. The case managers are educated in social services, mental health resources, housing, and transportation assistance.
In 2007, Feed Spokane, SNAP and the Spokane Transit Authority are striving to receive and provide as many as four times the current number of bus passes to those in need. We are looking forward to partnerships with local churches and organizations in order to reach or goal. STA generously agreed to form a matching program. For every bus pass donated, in turn STA will donate one. It is our hope that through this innovative community partnership we will be able to ensure that the neediest population in Spokane never goes hungry again.
