THE WASHINGTON POST BLOG 12/1/2006 I was deeply grieved by this article. I oversee a food rescue program in Spokane, Washington called Feed Spokane. We work with the local and state restaurant association to rescue food from area restaurants. It is provided to soup kitchens throughout our area, many of which are run out of church kitchens. Such food rescue programs, working in cooperation with local health officials, churches community organizations, have the potential to significantly impact both the homeless and the working poor. My own experience in these areas suggests to me that the need for such services in Farifax County as in Spokane County where I live in Washington Stateis probably far greater than the estimated 2,000 people referred to in the article. I long and pray for the day when governmental agencies, churches community organizations stop their juvenile turf wars and begin working together in a spirit of genuine cooperation with a view toward the goal we have here in Spokane, namely, that no one in our community would go hungry because there was nothing available for them. What a Christmas present that would be for all of our communities. Maurice Smith Executive Director, Feed Spokane msmith [at] parousianetwork [dot] org
